What is the Chocolate Bayou Festival (CBF)?
  • A celebration of the heritage, art, culture, and contributions of the Sunnyside and Chocolate Bayou Neighborhoods; an occasion to recognize the communities’ current assets and potential growth.
  • A year round program culminating in a weekend festival held in Sunnyside Park in Houston, Texas, featuring art and merchandise booths, food, entertainment, children’s zone, educational activities and resources.
  • A community-focused partnership committed to raising scholarship funds for neighborhood students: with $15.000.00 awarded to learners in the greater Sunnyside area
  • A community organizing initiative spearheaded by City Council Member Ada Edwards for the benefit of the District D citizens

Year-round activities

CBF works with adults and youth alike to produce family-oriented activities, volunteer opportunities, training symposiums, entertainment events, and community service outreach efforts to honor the Chocolate Bayou area.

FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES

Booths – More than 50 arts and merchandise booths and 15 food booths come to the festival to sell their wares and fare including art; books, collectibles, clothing and general merchandise appealing to broad audience.  The Cynthia Cooper Roopster Roux Youth Basketball Tournament and Food vendors sell traditional African American foods and various beverages.

Entertainment – CBF features live music, dance, poetry, and theatrical performances.

The festival highlights national, international and local entertainment.  National headliners have included MICHELE WILLIAMS, REGINA BELLE, LALAH HATHAWAY, ANGIE STONE, AND FLOETRY. Local artists have included, Step Rideaux, Caliente, Gospel choirs and Blues artist. 

2006 HEADLINERS:  Grammy Award Winners THE O’JAYS and Houston’s own LaTOYA LUCKETT

Youth Activities – CBF’s YOU Zone will feature games, educational activates, Little League Baseball activities and carnival-type rides for younger patrons to enjoy.  An emerging artist entertainment stage will feature a full program of youth oriented music entertainment and feature local Houston talent.
